CARAVAN SALES - SAFARI : Survival Tips

USING A SHACKLE

When using a shackle for recovery operations, tighten the bolt and then loosen it by a quarter of a turn. This prevents damage to the thread and makes releasing the bolt easier.

USING A SNATCH BLOCK

A snatch block is a heavy duty single line pully which doubles the pulling force of the winch and can change direction of the pull.

REWIRING YOUR ELECTRIC SOCKET

  1. Left-hand indicator
  2. Power point (fridge)
  3. Earth
  4. Right-hand indicator
  5. Right-hand tail light
  6. Brake lights
  7. Left-hand tale light and number plate.

SELECTING A SPADE

It should not be too heavy and must be long enough to dig under the vehicle. The blade should be shovel shaped but to too big as it makes it heavy and difficult to use.

TYRE PRESSURES

The rules are simple - if the tyres need to penetrate to obtain traction on rocks, hard steep slopes and shallow slippery mud then leave tyres at normal pressure. If tyres and sidewalls need protection inflate a further 20%. If tyres need to float over the surface such as soft sand or thick mud deflate the tyres (start at 1,5 bar and deflate further if necessary - don't go below 0,6 bar)

DEFLATING TYRES

Decide what pressure you want to deflate to. Time the deflation time on the first tyre to get down to that pressure. Now enlist the assistance of two friends and let down the other three tyres to the time it took for the first tyre.
